It’s a week before I head out to Colorado for ABS Nationals, so the training is tapering off (the entire practice tonight was just a laid back redpointing/projecting session). Going to focus on getting a ton of sleep and eating well all next week.
Found out tonight that one of the guys on the climbing team is coming out, too - which is awesome. It just occurred to me that I’ve never competed without the team there, so it probably would have thrown me off to be there solo.
Not sure what to expect of Citizens’ Nationals… I get the feeling that its laid back and casual, but part of me wants it to be hard and competitive. Guess I’ll find out soon enough. I know I’ve trained as much (and as well) as I could - however it turns out.

The Rock Ocelot: Attention all climbers!
I need your help!
I am doing a project for my entrepreneurial studies class about a hypothetical start-up small business, in my case a climbing gym.
I want to know what YOU would put in a gym if you had unlimited resources. What would make it more amazing than your current gym?
- Min 50’ walls - preferably higher.
- Top-out bouldering area w/ good mix of features + a well protected highball wall.
- IFSC certified speed wall (15 meter) with 2 lanes and an official timing system (Twin Dolphin or similar).
- Training room w/ multiple system, campus, and finger boards.
- Dedicated areas for both kids (i.e. bday parties) and instructional classes.
- Natural features (crack, chimney, off-width, tuffas).
- Lots and lots of large volumes for euro, world-cup style setting.
- A station w/ a few auto-belays for people to do laps on.
- Open early (6am) so people can come in before going to work.
Honestly, these are all table stakes for me (except for maybe the naturals) but I’m continually amazed at how many gyms don’t even manage to provide the basics.
The only gym I’ve been to that’s gotten this right is Stone Summit in Atlanta.

It’s looking like I’m going to be able to make it to ABS Nationals this year! I’m going to try competing in the citizens comp and then watch the pros battle it out during finals.
So. Stoked.

If climbers used the word ‘beta’ the way most software houses do, we’d all be dead.

I thought this was so hilarious that I had to show it to my wife.
She just shook her head and sighed.

I think about those two things a lot. Two not-shiny, not-new things that changed my life in incredible ways. […] If twenty-something me would have written a letter to Santa, he never would have asked for a bike or a climbing rope. But without those two things, I’d be a very different person.
